What is a Calcium Score?


The Heart Calcium Score is a high-resolution Computed Tomography of the heart with attention to the coronary arteries, which is meant to tell you if you are at risk for heart disease. Coronary artery calcification is analyzed by computer software and test results are depicted in photographic images with a calcium score. The heart calcium score procedure is pain free, with no needles or exercise and you are fully clothed. With a physician’s order and a few minutes of your time, you and your physician will have an accurate view of the calcium content of your coronary artery system.

What are the Benefits?

This High-Definition CT Heart Calcium Score is an excellent non-invasive test to demonstrate your risk for coronary artery disease.

It can give you and early warning and this test will answer many questions about your risk factors and whether additional test(s), such as angiography, may be needed.

What does a Calcium Score Test Include?

Heart Calcium Score tests are more that just scans of your heart. It is a cardiovascular assessment that includes:

  • A 64-Slice CT Scanner
  • High-definition images of your heart for your viewing
  • A personalized report of your results
  • A copy of your report is sent to the requesting physician

What should I Expect?

A service fee of $100 is due at the time of the test (most health plans do not cover this test). The actual exam only takes a few seconds. You should be in and out of our Imaging Center in less than 45 minutes. Wear normal street clothes for the test. Two-piece clothing is preferred. You will not need to change into a gown. You will briefly lie on a table and usually, with two breath holds, images of your coronary arteries are captured by computed tomography.

Lubbock Heart Hospital is equipped with a Siemens Sensation High-Resolution 64-Slice Computed Tomography machine that through digital reconstruction produces sharp, clear, three-dimensional images of the heart.

  • Age: Males over 40 and females over the age of 45 are at increased risk.
  • Family history: Heart disease within your immediate family increases your risk.
  • Tobacco: Any use of tobacco increases your risk.
  • High blood pressure
